All Around the Park By Kathryn Retzler ONCE UPON A TIME there were lots of little towns all across America. Each pretty much served as a local supply center for farms and folks who lived close by. People generally “went to town” once a week, often on Saturday, and once they got there, could usually find just about everything they needed from furniture to farm equipment, from doctor to dresses for all the girls in the family. Town was a place to socialize, catch up on gossip, see whose crops were good, who had new babies, who was getting married. Then
came interstates, supermarkets, and malls. Small towns faded away, or
just ran into one another as little
towns dried up and big ones grew
like weeds. It was sad to see them go. But wait—maybe they haven’t all gone. Have you been to Ridgway lately? Great medical services at each end of town. Two markets with fresh produce, local meats, home and health care products. A place to get poises or pets, and numerous stores selling clothing for men, women, and children. Plenty of choices for kitchen and household items from antique to contemporary. And if just plan shopping is your thing, you can easily make a day of it here. You’ll find several great places for lunch and plenty of evening action with live entertainment to complete your day. Hungry? We’ve got hamburgers, ice cream, homemade soups, and healthy salads. Fine dining? Got ya covered. Several places offer a menu to rival anything you’d find in Durango, Denver, or even New York. Junk food? Of course. At either market and both “convenience” store/gas stations. Wanna buy or rent a house or find somebody to sell or rent yours? Ridgway has several realtors and property managers. (If you stop by Independence Cafe Thursday through Sunday night, your bartender is also a broker!) In fact, most of the business people in town wear several hats, a common lifestyle in mountain towns like this one where making a living is a creative endeavor. Whatever you want, whatever you need, you’ll probably find it within walking distance of the town park. Ridgway isn’t very big, but it sure has a lot to offer. Makes park and partake of “one stop shopping” a breeze. With the river walk, you can even venture further and bike to Montrose or Ouray for more. Rather than ‘laundry list” all of the shops, services, and restaurants in town, we’ve showcased a few businesses surrounding the Town Park, along the river, and residing in the old business district of Clinton and Cora streets. There’s only one way to find out what’s inside: go look for yourself! The best way to find out about this little town is to do like the “once upon a time” people did. Go to town!
