Bloomfield Attractions by
Dorothy J. Nobis Bloomfield, New Mexico [Summer 2001] The orchards bearing apples, peaches and cherries no longer dominate the landscape around Bloomfield, New Mexico. Where fruit was once harvested, neighborhoods now thrive, and fields where crops once grew are home to oil and gas companies. If the community isn’t exactly rural anymore, the atmosphere of the city is. For here, in the beautiful valley of the San Juan River, neighbors know each other’s names, city government champions its residents, and small businesses thrive and grow. Considered by many to be the hub of the Four Corners, Bloomfield offers new residents and businesses more than just a friendly handshake and a hearty welcome. Salmon Ruins, with its more than 200 rooms, several towers and kivas, attracts visitors from the across the world. Heritage Park is adjacent to the ruins, and includes historic and prehistoric exhibits of the culture of the Four Corners, including a trading post and homestead. Chaco Culture National Historic Park is nearby, and Mesa Verde National Park, with its famous cliff dwellings, is within driving distance. Closer to home is Aztec Ruins National Monument with a large, restored kiva. Anglers from throughout the world enjoy the Quality Waters of the San Juan River, which is just minutes from Bloomfield. Boaters and water sport enthusiasts find Navajo Lake a warm weather treasure and it, too, is a short 40-minute drive from the hub of the Four Corners. Bloomfield is a tourist’s delight, and it also provides a positive business community, aided by the Bloomfield Visitor Center and Chamber of Com-merce. With information about activities and attractions throughout the Four Corners and New Mexico, the Visitor Center offers a friendly staff who finds each visitor a priority and strives to make them new friends.
