Jeeping The San Juans

Ouray, Colorado

Nothing beats the rush of climbing up a steep and rocky road as you watch the tires of your jeep pass only inches away from deadly drop offs. Nothing, except the majestic beauty you experience while jeeping in the San Juans. Only here can you see perfect placid lakes, so clear that they seem to be part of a fairy tale, surrounded by fields of wildflowers in every color of the rainbow. You can drive right up to a flowing stream or a gushing waterfall and truly experience what nature is about.

There are many different types of tours you can take to see the area, ranging from a walk in the park to a ride equivalent with a roller coaster. This is all part of the world-famous "Alpine Loop."

Yankee Boy
For those who enjoy serene beauty and little danger, there
is the Yankee Boy tour, which
is known for its great view of Twin Falls and its amazing wildflowers. It's a relaxing
ride that makes you remember why you came to the
"Gem of the Rockies."

Ophir Pass/Last Dollar
The Ophir-Last Dollar tour takes you over Last Dollar Pass and into Telluride. It's especially lovely in the fall when all the aspens are turning from green to gold, a beautiful contrast with the stubby, fiery red oak brush. Along the way, you will pass (and perhaps stop and explore) remnants of old ghost towns along with relics of mines and mills from the 1800s.

Engineer Pass
If you are up for a little more excitement, try Engineer Pass with its rough and steep climb to over 12,000 feet in elevation. It's quite an adventure, as you pass more old mines and ghosts towns, all with a terrific scenic view.

Black Bear
Black Bear Pass, the grand-daddy of alpine tours, is definitely not for the faint hearted. Hold on as you climb up tight switchbacks and watch the world disappear below. Although it is probably not for first timers, and best done with a tour guide rather than on your own, don't miss an opportunity to tour one of the most renowned four wheeling trails in the area. (When you've "done" Black Bear, buy one of the tee shirts in town celebrating your accomplishment!)

A word to the wise... Although jeeping is fun, it can be dangerous if you are not experienced. The trails can often be steep and treacherous. Any western slope native will tell you to tour with one of the many Jeep Tour companies in the area. Their guides are experienced and trustworthy and will provide a worry free time. They also will regale you with little known stories of the area from past and present (a great addition to the scenery) and you never have to worry about getting lost. Many full day tours also provide a great lunch at some of the finest restaurants in the area. One of the best parts of having a guide is the great photo opportunities-instead of watching the road, you can concentrate on the scenery and photograph it to your heart's content.

Remember to bring both warm and cool clothes because as they say in Colorado, "If you don't like the weather, wait five minutes. It's sure to change." And don't forget your camera.
