Montrose, Colorado

MONTROSE IS CHANGING. Accompanying the seemingly unstoppable river of newcomers to the area, many of whom are young retirees or who have young families, comes the demand for more, and more varied, goods and services. You used to have to travel to the metropolitan areas, like Denver and Colorado Springs, and yes, even Grand Junction, to find all but the most basic things to decorate your home or yourself. Now, just like Arlo Guthrie sang in the 1960s, “you can get everything you want at Alice’s Restaurant, ‘ceptin’ Alice,” you can find everything you want in Montrose.

Riding the tide of increased population, “Big Box” stores fill the south end of town, and, even more heartening and exciting, downtown is experiencing a resurgence it hasn’t seen in more than half a century. Chic shops and restaurants draw day trippers and shoppers from around the region. Downtown encompasses twelve blocks of businesses on both sides of Main Street, and a mile along the Townsend Avenue (US 50/550) corridor, and includes everything from decorator antiques, franchise restaurants, and sporting goods shops, to home furnishings and accessories, several great dining establishments, and upscale boutiques. Below, some of the highlights, but by no means all of the great shops and restaurants downtown. Most all of these are in wonderful, historic old buildings, adding to the charm and excitement of a downtown shopping adventure.
